My Story

I was first introduced to the British Shorthair while visiting a friend in England. ‘Beatrice’, my friend’s bi coloured British Shorthair won my heart!

I was impressed with the nature and personality of the breed, not to mention the thick crisp coat and that “teddy bear” head for which the breed is famous.

I decided to become a British Shorthair owner and so my search began. First of all, I purchased a reputable book on the breed and studied the standard, and then visited my first cat show. I picked the brains of the judges there and visited about 20 British Shorthair cattery web sites.

I knew what I was looking for. I not only wanted a British Shorthair for companionship, I wanted to represent the breed and introduce it to my part of the world. I decided as well, that for now, I would focus on the blue colour. Nothing can be more striking than that light blue coat with those big round deep copper orange eyes. What a striking combination! That to me is what a true British Shorthair should be. This wonderful breed of cat had to be maintained and promoted.

I purchased my first show quality female from Catwalks cattery in Denmark. Lillibet arrived in my life in January 2003. In her debut American Cat Fancy Association show in Halifax she placed in the top ten in every ring and four judges gave her FIRST. She was a hit with the judges and ended up from that back to back show the second best kitten of all breeds in the Eastern Canada region.

My choice of a female kitten to start my cattery proved to be the right choice and in her first show as an adult received her Championship status. She proved herself and so the search for an eligible bachelor began. I choose Mat, another great specimen of the breed from Laziblues Cattery in New York. Mat is a champion with a very impressive pedigree. He has tremendous bone structure, great coat, excellent eye colour and super personality. A real charmer!! Mat and Lillibet had their first litter July 8, 2004.

Lillibet has been great company and a lot of fun. I look forward to her running to me when I arrive home from work. Of course I always ask her for a kiss and she always stands up and places a paw on each cheek and kisses me on the lips. A very intelligent breed and easily trained to do tricks. I would have to agree with someone’s statement that the British Shorthair is the closest thing to a dog there is still very much a cat! I love the British Shorthair.
